Let’s face it, overtaking is an important part of karting. Overtaking needs to be smooth and efficient. It needs to be calculated in order to achieve success.
Preparing Before Hand
During practice laps, it’s a good idea to consciously look for good places to overtake. You want to consider the best driving line for overtaking, it’s best to practice. Plus if you have prior thought and knowledge of the track you can race with a plan already in mind.
The most likely way you are going to be able to pass your opponents is to outbrake and accelerate, sounds simple yeah?
Well here’s how you might consider doing this whilst going into a turn.
1. You need to be able to out-brake your opponent into the corner so you have an inside advantage. This way you will have a tighter line and will be able to have a speedier exit coming out of the corner.
It’s important that you don’t dive into a corner, try to make it obvious to the driver you intend on overtaking so they don’t turn into you. If you’re not level with the opponent and they start turning its paramount you back off to avoid a collision.
2. Out accelerating out of a corner, this method uses a wider line when going into a corner, meaning you can accelerate before your opponent. Ideally you want to be heading straight forward on full throttle as your opponent is just coming out the corner.
So next time you hit the track try this out and you’re bound for glory.
