Lewis Hamilton completed 156 laps for Mercedes in the first Barcelona Test.
He described the full debut of Mercedes’ 2016 car as “amazing” once he has completed the equivalent to two races in Barcelona.
Hamilton beat his prior record of 150 laps in the W06 as he clocked up an impressive 156 laps around the Circuit de Catalunya. He finished second to Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel on the timesheet.
He claimed that he cannot remember such a successful start in his nine year F1 career.
“It’s been an amazing day,” a beaming Hamilton told reporters afterwards.
“I’ve never had a Day One practice like today. To get in a new car and have no problems is just a remarkable job by the team. So, for me, it was encouraging”
He was highly impressed with his new Mercedes in pre-season testing, this was the first time he has taken to the track in an official season since finishing second to his team mate Nico Rosberg.
Hamilton was beaten in the final three races of the 2015 season after voicing concerns tha ta change of the W06 had affected its handling and performance.
The biggest structural change Mercedes have made for the W07 is on the chassis side, where they have raised the protection area around the driver by 20mm and increased the side impact test load from 15kN to 50kN.
“There was something Lewis Hamilton didn’t like on the car at the end of last year,” reported Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz before testing at the Circuit de Catalunya commenced. “He needs to understand this car and he will know within the first two or three laps whether it has same suspension characteristics he didn’t get on with last year or if it is a completely new start.”
